Kani Kusruti turned down the call by The Kerala Story

Malayalam actor Kani Kusruti has garnered international recognition for her role in Payal Kapadia’s film, All We Imagine As Light. The film recently won the historic Grand Prix award at the Cannes Film Festival 2024, marking a significant achievement for Indian cinema. In an interview with Manorama Online, Kani discussed her career choices and the limited film offers she receives despite her acclaimed performances.

Turning Down Controversial Roles

Kani revealed that she turned down an audition call from Sudipto Sen, the director of the polarizing Bollywood film The Kerala Story. She emphasized her commitment to choosing projects that align with her personal and political beliefs. “I can only do films that come to me. If I do not get employment, I will again have to choose films that do not align with my politics,” Kani explained. Despite winning the Kerala State Award for her nuanced performance in Sajin Baabu’s 2019 release Biriyaani, she continues to face challenges in finding roles that resonate with her values.

Controversy Surrounding Biriyaani

Kani faced criticism for her role in Biriyaani, with some claiming the film portrayed Muslims in a generalized, objectionable light. Addressing this, Kani said, “I had told Sajin that neither my politics nor aesthetics were aligned with the script. Sajin comes from a backward Muslim community and speaks his politics, which is correct in its own right. But that is not my politics.” Her choice to participate in the film highlights the complex decisions actors often face when balancing personal beliefs and professional opportunities.

Making a Statement at Cannes

Kani made a bold political statement at the Cannes Film Festival by carrying a watermelon-shaped handbag to show solidarity with Palestine amidst the ongoing Israel-Palestine conflict. This gesture underscored her commitment to using her platform to advocate for causes she believes in.

Historic Win for All We Imagine As Light

All We Imagine As Light premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and made history as the first Indian film in 30 years to enter the main competition category. Directed by Payal Kapadia, the film also became the first Indian entry to win the Grand Prix award, the second highest honor at the festival. The film stars Kani Kusruti and Chhaya Kadam, further elevating Kani’s profile on the global stage.
