Shekhar Suman says Pakistanis are jealous of Heeramandi

Shekhar Suman has garnered praise for his portrayal of Nawab Zulfikar in the popular series Heeramandi. Known for his versatility and sense of humor as a former talk show host, Suman has made bold statements regarding the mixed reactions to Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s latest show.

Response to Pakistani Critics

In an interview, Shekhar Suman addressed the criticism of Heeramandi, specifically targeting those questioning its historical accuracy and authenticity. Suman stated, “A lot of stupid people are fussing and obsessing over it, talking about it and questioning the historical accuracy and authenticity and chronology.” He emphasized that Sanjay Leela Bhansali is known for creating dystopian sagas and unique cinematic worlds, and that Heeramandi should be seen as an artistic interpretation rather than a documentary.

Suman also pointed out that some critics from Pakistan have expressed jealousy over the production of Heeramandi. He remarked, “There are some people of the neighbouring country who are feeling very jealous about the fact ki inhone kyu bana dia? Bhai aap bana lete and why are you even discussing our Heeramandi? We don’t discuss your films. We don’t even know whether you make films.”

The Story and Setting of Heeramandi

Set against the backdrop of the Indian independence movement, Heeramandi is an epic drama set in the 1920s and 1940s during the British Raj. The title of the show is derived from the red-light district of Heera Mandi in Lahore, which was a significant location during pre-partition India. The story revolves around the power struggle among the courtesans of Heera Mandi, the Nawabs of Lahore, and the British officers.

Shekhar Suman plays Nawab Zulfikar, while his son Adhyayan Suman portrays the younger Zulfikar and Nawab Zorawar. The series boasts a star-studded cast including Manisha Koirala, Sonakshi Sinha, Aditi Rao Hydari, Sharmin Segal, Sanjeeda Sheikh, Farida Jalal, and Fardeen Khan, among others. Each actor delivers powerful performances that bring the intricate story to life.

Shekhar Suman’s Defense of Heeramandi

Heeramandi, which released on May 1, 2024, received mixed reactions from viewers and critics. Despite this, the series has been renewed for a second season, indicating that it has found a dedicated audience. The renewal also suggests that Bhansali’s unique vision and storytelling continue to captivate and intrigue viewers.

Suman defended Bhansali’s creative liberties, stating that cinema should not be questioned as it represents the director’s point of view. He urged critics to appreciate the artistic interpretation and to understand that Heeramandi is not a historical documentary but a creative retelling.
