Swades Re-release Confirmed by Ronnie Screwvala

Fans of Shah Rukh Khan have a reason to rejoice as Ronnie Screwvala has confirmed the re-release of the 2004 classic, Swades – We The People. The announcement comes on the heels of successful re-releases of other iconic films like Ranbir Kapoor’s Rockstar (2011) and Hrithik Roshan’s Lakshya (2004). In an interview with India Today, the founder of RSVP Movies emphasized that Swades was “ahead of its time” and deserves a second chance to shine on the big screen. Screwvala called Swades an “evergreen story” that inspired many, stating, “It could re-release for sure. I keep telling everyone that it was a film ahead of its time. Therefore, it needs its second time around.”

Swades: A Story That Resonates with All Generations

Directed by Ashutosh Gowariker, Swades tells the poignant tale of Mohan Bhargav, an Indian-origin NASA scientist, portrayed by Shah Rukh Khan, who returns to India to find his nanny, Kaveri Amma. His journey back to his roots exposes him to the socio-economic challenges of rural India, ultimately inspiring him to set up a micro hydroelectric project to generate electricity for the village. The film’s theme of reconnecting with one’s heritage and contributing to one’s homeland resonates deeply, especially with younger generations who study abroad but yearn to return and make a difference in their home country. “The film represents the spirit and mood of the nation, and therefore is very relevant,” Screwvala added.

The Legacy of Swades

Swades is not just a film but a movement that has continued to inspire since its release. The story was partially inspired by the 2003 Kannada film Chigurida Kanasu and has since left an indelible mark on Indian cinema. Apart from Shah Rukh Khan’s stellar performance, the film featured Gayatri Joshi, Kishori Ballal, Rajesh Vivek, Daya Shankar Pandey, and Lekh Tandon in significant roles. The film’s excellence was recognized with Mahesh Aney winning the National Film Award for Best Cinematography and Udit Narayan bagging the National Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer for the song “Yeh Taara Woh Taara.”

Ronnie Screwvala’s confirmation of Swades re-release is a testament to its timeless appeal and the powerful message it conveys. As fans eagerly await this classic’s return to theaters, the film continues to symbolize hope, patriotism, and the enduring spirit of India.
