Harry Potter and Downtown Abbey actress Dame Maggie Smith has passed away at the age of 89. Actress sons Toby Stephens and Chris Larkin released an official statement.

The official press release stated, It is with great sadness we have to announce the death of Dame Maggie Smith,” “She passed away peacefully in hospital… with friends and family at the end.”

According to the statement the renowned British actress died on Friday morning , September 27th, 2024 at at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital.

Actress family also expressed their gratitude to the staff at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, praising their “care and unstinting kindness” during her final days. The actress is survived by her two sons and five grandchildren. Her family requested privacy at this difficult time.

Dame Maggie Smith was a British actress known for her wit in comedic roles, she had an extensive career on stage and screen over seven decades and was one of Britain’s most recognisable and prolific actresses.

She received numerous accolades including two Academy Awards, five BAFTA Awards, four Emmy Awards, three Golden Globe Awards and a Tony Award as well as nominations for six Laurence Olivier Awards. Smith was one of the few performers to earn the Triple Crown of Acting.

Maggie Smith: Downton Abbey and Harry Potter roles weren't satisfying

Dame Maggie Smith won Academy Awards for Best Actress for The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie and Best Supporting Actress for California Suite and was nominated several time for best actress for  Travels with My Aunt , A Room with a View and Gosford Park .

She gained worldwide recognition for her role Professor Minerva McGonagall in the Harry Potter film series . She also acted in Death on the Nile , Hook , Sister Act , The Secret Garden , The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel , Quartet and The Lady in the Van.

Mggie received newfound attention and international fame for her role as Violet Crawley in the British period drama Downton Abbey (2010–2015).
