Diljit Dosanjh’s ‘Punjab 95’ removed from TIFF?

Singer, song-writer and actor Diljit Dosanjh’s Punjab 95 is a “a compelling story based on the life of human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra,” as per producer RSVP.  The festival described the film as telling the story of Khalra “uncovering murderous corruption during Punjab’s period of insurgency” in social media posts.

The potentially controversial film was to premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, but has been removed from the lineup. Though in July 2023 the movie’s team announced its screening at the TIFF, there is currently no mention of the movie on the Film Festival’s website.

The movie was directed by Honey Trehan and stars Diljit in the titular role of the human activist along with Arjun Rampal and Suvinder Pal Vicky in important roles.

Though any official claims or statements regarding the issue have not been made, sources claim that  ‘political forces are at play’ in regards to the film being pulled from Toronto, as Canada has the second largest Sikh population in the world after India.

Unfortunately, the film has been under scrutiny since it’s announcement. The film was actually named ‘Ghallughara’, a historical term used to refer to the massacre of Sikhs in 1746, 1762 and 1984. When the production banner RSVP applied for certification from India’s Central Board of Film Certification in late 2022, the process took six months and it was cleared with 21 cuts and a change of title to Punjab 95.
