Human rights organization demands ‘Remove Bawaal from Prime Video’

Bollywood’s recent sensation, Bawaal, directed by Nitesh Tiwari, starring Janhvi Kapoor and Varun Dhawan, has landed in controversy internationally.

Digging into the news, the Jewish human rights body Simon Wiesenthal Center has pointed out the way that film has conflated the tragedy in the narrative. In the film, the actor and actress will be seen travelling to World War II sites and visiting a gas chamber in Auschwitz.

In a dream-like sequence, both of them are shown inside a gas chamber, where they are seen struggling to breathe. In a particular scene, when speaking about human greed, Jhanvi’s character in the film, Nisha, says, “We’re all a little like Hitler, aren’t we?”. And in another scene, Nisha is heard saying, “Every relationship goes through their Auschwitz”.

All these scenes and dialogues led to a huge controversy. Marking them, the Jewish human rights organization – Simon Wiesenthal Center, which defends the safety of Jews worldwide, demanded Amazon to “stop monetizing” Bawaal with immediate effect and called the film a “banal trivialisation of the systematic murder of millions of victims of the Nazi Holocaust.”

Their statement reads, ‘If the director’s goal was to gain PR for their film by reportedly filming a fantasy sequence at the Nazi death camp, he has succeeded, but Amazon Prime Video has to stop monetizing Bawaal by immediately removing this banal trivialization of the suffering and systematic murder of millions of victims of the Nazi Holocaust.”.

With this demand, we have to wait and see what happens further.
