Challenges the creators may face:

Julie Plec, during an interview, said that despite the deaths of various characters in The Vampire Diaries, returning to Mystic Falls through a movie could still be exciting for fans. The show’s major plus point was the star cast, which was one of the main reasons for its massive fan following. Julie pointed out that the major challenge that they would face would be the aging of the actors. She talked about how, according to the story, the vampires do not age, whereas the actors have naturally aged since the show ended, and this effect can complicate bringing back the original cast.

Possible storyline:

Still, Plec seemed optimistic about finding ways to retain the original cast to pay tribute to the characters. She also mentioned that she has a few ideas for the storyline continuation. One plot that could be explored is around Bonnie Bennett, played by Kat Graham. Bonnie is one of the greatest witches, and her character is less explored. So the movie about Bonnie and Bennett witches can also be a possibility.

However, as of now nothing is planned, but Plec is aware of the fan following, the craze that the show still holds, and how people are eager to see their favorite characters on screen again.
