Jon Watts Not Directing Spider-Man 4: Then Who?

The past two days have been thrilling for Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) fans eagerly seeking news about upcoming movies and shows. Kevin Feige, preparing for his presentation at San Diego Comic-Con on July 27, has been making some exciting revelations about future MCU projects.

He discussed Avengers 5, Secret Wars, X-Men, and more. Notably, he provided significant details about Spider-Man 4, the fourth film in Tom Holland’s standalone franchise, which might mark the beginning of a new trilogy for the web-slinging superhero. Previously, there had only been rumors about the film, but Feige has now confirmed many details, including the exit of Jon Watts as director.

Kevin Feige Confirms Jon Watts’ Departure from Spider-Man 4

For those unaware, Jon Watts has been to the Marvel Cinematic Universe what Sam Raimi was to Sony’s Spider-Man trilogy starring Tobey Maguire. Watts directed all three MCU Spider-Man movies: Homecoming, Far From Home, and No Way Home. His successful streak made fans believe that he would direct Spider-Man 4.

However, rumors suggested that the producers were seeking a new director, indicating Watts’ departure. These rumors were true, as Kevin Feige confirmed that Jon Watts is no longer attached to Spider-Man 4. Watts is currently occupied with other projects, making it impossible for him to commit to the fourth Spider-Man film, necessitating the search for a new director.

Kevin Feige on Jon Watts’ Other Commitments

Kevin Feige expressed his appreciation for Jon Watts, stating, “We love Jon. Jon did three of the best Spider-Man films ever for us. He’s got lots of things going on now. So we’ll probably be looking for somebody else, just because he’s busy.” Watts has a full schedule, with the movie “Wolfs,” starring George Clooney and Brad Pitt, set to release this year. Additionally, Watts will join the Star Wars universe. He is expected to direct some episodes of the upcoming Disney+ show “Skeleton Crew.” His packed schedule leaves no room for Spider-Man 4, prompting the need for a new director.

Additional Updates on Spider-Man 4

The follow-up to Spider-Man: No Way Home is expected to explore Peter Parker’s PTSD from losing everyone he loved and his current state of having no friends. It was recently revealed that the producers have already chosen a new director and are set to begin work soon. The film is being developed in collaboration with Sony. Which recently had a disagreement with Marvel over the plot and release date of the movie.

In an interview, Kevin Feige provided an update on Spider-Man 4. Saying, “Amy [Pascal] and I are working on it. We have writers who are going to be delivering us a draft relatively soon.” Although the film is still far from entering production, the ongoing work is a positive confirmation for fans. In the meantime, viewers in India can watch Spider-Man: No Way Home and many other Spider-Man films on SonyLIV.
