Christopher Nolan Says Some ‘Oppenheimer’ Viewers Walk Out ‘Devastated’

Oppenheimer is a much-awaited biographical thriller directed by the iconic Christopher Nolan, known for his movies Interstellar, Inception, Tenet, etc. Nolan is known to make movies with larger-than-life concepts where the story plays the most crucial role, and this movie is no different, though it does mark his first biographical film. The movie is about the real-life theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, known as the “father of the atomic bomb”, set during the period of World War II and based on the 2005 biography American Prometheus by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin. It stars Cillian Murphy as the namesake, with Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr., and Florence Pugh in important roles.

The director is making headlines for his recent interview with Wired magazine, where he warns fans that Oppenheimer just might emotionally destroy them. “Some people leave the movie absolutely devastated,” Nolan said in regard to early screenings. “They can’t speak. I mean, there’s an element of fear that’s there in the history and there in the underpinnings. But the love of the characters, the love of the relationships, is as strong as I’ve ever done.”

He went on to say, “It is an intense experience, because it’s an intense story. I showed it to a filmmaker recently who said it’s kind of a horror movie. I don’t disagree.” After observing these initial reactions from the early screening, Nolan informs fans to come prepared for a powerful experience about the man who fathered one of the first nuclear weapons to end the war and how it changed history!
