12 years of Lyme disease – Bella Hadid’s never-give-up attitude shines through

From her face, I’m sure your first thought is she’s somebody’s look-alike from Hollywood. The eldest Hadid of the three, Gigi Hadid is the answer. See the resemblance now?

But, Bella has an identity of her own, apart from being Gigi’s sister. She is an American Hollywood model who has made 29 appearances on International Vogue covers, which is 3 points more than her age. Yes, she’s just 26! In 2023, she was on the list of 100 most influential people in the world by The Time Magazine.

Dishearteningly, with such success, there came an equally disastrous downfall in the Hadid family. Three-forth of the family, as in Bella’s mom (Yolanda) and younger brother (Anwar) have a chronic illness called Lyme disease. Gigi, reportedly, is not diagnosed with Lyme.

Usually, Lyme can be cured within 2 to 4 weeks of treatment. However, in rare cases, it becomes chronic, something the Hadid family became prey to. It is borne in humans through the bite of infected black-legged ticks. Channeling the agony of this disease into productive steps, the Hadid family has used their platform to promote awareness and find an affordable cure for everyone suffering from this invisible disease. Yolanda Hadid’s post from 2016 is a gut-twisting photograph of Bella lying next to her in bed, lifeless, with an IV inserted in her forearm.

Even to this date, Bella continues to fall apart from time to time because of Lyme but gets right back up. Her bright modeling career is proof that she hasn’t let Lyme define the course of her life.
