Young performers like Nitanshi Goel, Sparsh Shrivastava, and Pratibha Ranta starred in the Kiran Rao-directed film. In significant parts in the comedy-drama were Ravi Kishan and Chhaya Kadam. Following the declaration, Laapataa Ladies—which received a score of ‘Indianness’—was chosen as India’s official Oscar entry, according to jury chairman Jahnu Barua. Barua pointed out that a movie needs to depict the socioeconomic structures of India.

“The jury has to look at the right film that represents India on all fronts. Particularly, the film has to represent India’s social systems and ethos. The Indianness is very important, and Laapataa Ladies scored on that front,” Barua said.
The director went on to say that India should officially submit its “best-suited film” for an Academy Award. He said that the jury might select from the list of 29 movie titles that they have been provided.
With “unanimous” consent, the 13-member jury, led by Jahnu Barua, selected Laapataa Ladies to represent India in the Academy Awards’ Best International Film category.
On Monday, September 23, 2024, The Film Federation of India revealed the news of Laapataa Ladies, selecting as India’s official submission for the 97th Academy Awards. the movie supported by Kiran Rao and Aamir Khan.
Kiran Rao, Director-producer recently shared an emotional message regarding the victory on Instagram. In her post she mentioned that she is “beyond delighted.” And further expressed her gratitude to the actors and crew of Laapataa Ladies. She also stated that their “immense talent, dedication, and hard work made this film possible.”

Aamir Khan’s Production house also recognized the most recent accomplishment of Laapataa Ladies through on their official Instagram account. The post said, “Deeply honored and delighted for #LaapataaLadies to be chosen as India’s official entry to #Oscars2025,”
Laapataa Ladies was up against Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Animal ; Karan Johar’s Kill; and Nag Ashwin’s Kalki 2898 AD, for the most recent Oscar nomination, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Several additional films, including Sam Bahadur, Article 370, were also on the list.
About ‘Laapata Ladies’
This comedy-drama marks Kiran Rao’s second attempt at directing a Bollywood film. In 2010, Rao made her feature film directing debut with Dhobi Ghat, which Aamir Khan co-produced.
The plot of Kiran Rao’s Laapataa Ladies centers on two brides, Phool and Pushpa. They unintentionally switch places while traveling by train. Sparsh Shrivastava played the role of Phool Kumari. The on-screen spouse of Deepak Kumar, with Nitanshi Goel.
