Farah Khan Shares Untold Stories Behind DDLJ

Renowned choreographer Farah Khan recently shared some intriguing behind-the-scenes stories about her involvement in the iconic Bollywood film, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (DDLJ). In an interview with Radio Nasha, Farah recounted how she was approached last minute by Shah Rukh Khan and Aditya Chopra to choreograph some of the film’s memorable songs. This revelation sheds light on the challenges and commitments faced by industry professionals.

A Chance Opportunity in Switzerland

Farah Khan’s career took an unexpected turn when veteran choreographer Saroj Khan was delayed in reaching the sets of DDLJ in Switzerland. Farah, who had already established a rapport with Shah Rukh Khan after working together on Kundan Shah’s 1994 romantic film Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa, received a surprising call. “I didn’t have a phone at my home then. My neighbour got a call. There was Shah Rukh and Adi (Aditya Chopra) on the phone. Shah Rukh asked me, ‘Farah, can you come to Switzerland tomorrow? Yash Raj Films will organise. There are 2-3 songs we need you to do.'”

Despite the opportunity to work on a prestigious project, Farah remained committed to her prior engagement with Nana Patekar for the film Yeshwant. “I swear I told them, ‘Sorry, my dates are with Nana Patekar. Day after, I’m shooting with Nana Patekar and I can’t ditch that shooting because I’ve got a bigger film.’” This decision reflects Farah’s integrity and dedication to her commitments, a quality that earned her respect in the industry.

Earning Respect and Trust

Farah Khan’s decision to honor her commitment to Yeshwant, despite the allure of working on DDLJ, did not go unnoticed. When the DDLJ team returned from Switzerland, Aditya Chopra expressed his admiration for Farah’s professionalism. “Adi called me to meet him. He said, ‘I really admire that you stuck to your commitment. Not everyone does that. The minute you get a bigger film, you dump the smaller one.’ He had just one song left and asked me to do it. It was Ruk Ja O Dil Deewane.”

Farah’s integrity not only secured her role in choreographing one of DDLJ’s iconic songs but also reinforced the importance of trust and reliability in the entertainment industry. “If you’ve given your word and if you don’t stay true to it, no one can trust you,” Farah added. This principle has evidently guided her successful career, making her one of Bollywood’s most respected choreographers.

Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, directed by Aditya Chopra and starring Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol, went on to become one of Bollywood’s biggest blockbusters. Farah Khan’s contribution to the film, though limited to a single song, remains a testament to her dedication and professionalism in the industry.
