In an interview, When Prem Kumar was questioned about the sequel he said “When I started writing, it was one story that excited me more than anything else.” when asked about its release the director said that about 10-15% of the writing is yet to be done. “Before I could finish, I wrote Meiyazhagan because this is more achievable. Both Trisha and Vijay Sethupathi are also very busy and are big stars. So, my script too should be on par and impress them as much as 96 did. I will have to serve it properly to them. Hence it might take some time after the release of Meiyazhagan. My wish is to make 96- 2 soon. Hope it happens.”
