Malayalam films boycott : Here’s why PVR INOX banned the screening of Mollywood films

Malayalam films boycott

Malayalam films boycott : This year has been a banner year for the Malayalam cinema industry, with several films becoming famous across the country.

Recent releases, like Aavesham, Varshangalkku Shesham, and Jai Ganesh, are also on track to become hits.

Nonetheless, PVR INOX theater chains have decided not to play the films, despite the fact that they draw a considerable number of spectators.

PVR and INOX’s drastic decision stems from the ongoing dispute between Malayalam filmmakers and theatre owners over the Virtual Print Fee (VPF).

This fee is paid to service providers such as QUBE for screening films in multiplexes.

PVR INOX and Malayalam films conflict

The disappearance of Malayalam films from theaters in Kerala and other places is the result of an ongoing disagreement between PVR and the Kerala Film Producers Association (KFPA).

The issue between KFPA and PVR INOX occurred when the former founded a new content-providing company and asked Kerala theaters to conduct all business through their platform.

This prompted PVR to express concerns about the practice, which resulted in a suspension to Malayalam film screenings in Kerala and the removal of dubbed versions in other states.

This not only has an impact on the livelihoods of filmmakers in Kerala, but it also puts distributors in other states at risk.

According to the Hindustan Times, Sashidhar Reddy of Mythri Movies has filed a complaint with the Telugu Film Chamber of Commerce because PVR INOX has banned the exhibition of Manjummel Boys’ Telugu version.
