From being an assistant director to directing India’s highest-budget movie, Nag Ashwin’s career was challenging. Starting a career as a writer in the film industry requires a lot of patience and hard work, which Nag did. His career remains an inspiring one for all the young and upcoming directors.
Ashwin started his career as an assistant director for the film Nenu Meku Telusa. He worked in the same role for the films Leader and Life Is Beautiful with director Sekhar Kamula, whom he calls Guru. Ashwin played a minor role as a “gold-faced” guy in Life is Beautiful.
After working as an assistant director in 2012, he made his debut film as a director with Yedade Subramanyam in 2015. The two-year gap between the journey from assistant director to director had many ups and downs. Yevade Subramanyam is a film that makes everyone feel close to themselves. Nag has shown the perfect meaning of life in just 2 hours of film, which feels impossible sometimes. This film marked the rebirth of Vyjayanthi Production House, even for Ashwin, as this was his first film. He called it birth, as it feels like a birth.
Nag entered the film industry without a background. Ashwini Dutt, who has become the backbone of Nag, is a simple example. Ashwini Dutt’s daughter Priyanka Dutt getting married to a debut director because they fell in love while making Yedade Subramanyam shows how they believed in him. In several interviews, the producers have confessed many times that Nag has given rebirth to their production house.
After his debut film, Nag took on the most significant challenge: directing the biopic of Savitri. A man with experience in one movie was challenged to show Savatri’s incredible life journey on screen. There is a small story behind why Nag wanted to make Savitri’s biopic. Ashwin happened to hear the six-hour radio interview with Savitri by Kiran Prabha, which was released in three parts. That’s how the director got the idea of adapting her life story for the silver screen. “I wanted to work on a film that was more relevant than my debut film, which was about existential crisis,” said Nag.
It took Nag and his team three years to bring the final output of Mahanati to life, from selecting the actors to presenting it on the silver screen. As always, his family was behind him and produced Mahanati. This film was made with a budget of 25 crore and collected 83 crore. He gained widespread recognition when he was released in 2018. The film starred Keerthy Suresh in the titular role and featured an ensemble cast, including Dulquer Salmaan, Samantha Akkineni, Vijay Deverakonda, and others. It received critical acclaim for its storytelling, performances, and technical aspects. The movie was a commercial success and won several awards, including three National Film Awards.
He later worked on Pitta Kathalu, an anthology drama film with four short segments. 2021 was the wake-up call for Nag Ashwin as he took on another challenge as director. On the 50th anniversary of Vyjayanthi’s production, Project K was announced in February 2020.
After finishing the groundwork, this film began to become a reality. From visualising scenes to making them a reality, Nag has his heart and soul in this movie. Project K stars Prabhas, Amitabh Bachchan, Kamal Haasan, Deepika Padukone, and Disha Patani are already shooting for the film. It seems that Nag is the captain of this project. Nag is creating a massive craze for this movie by unweaving small video clippings from the movie.
Project K is an essential film for Prabhas. He has been facing continuous flops since Bahubali. This film has a massive budget of Rs. 500 crore. Under the Vyajanthi Movies banner is producer Ashwini Dutt, who is producing this film with tremendous confidence in his son-in-law. This is a dream come true for this production to make this huge-budget film.
Some upcoming films start with the letter K. The prestige and recognition these films receive can vary depending on critical acclaim, box office success, and audience reception. However, the hype surrounding a film can sometimes lead to disappointment for fans. We will have to wait until 2024 to unravel the plot of huge epic science fiction.
