With 57 crores of rupees, Oppenheimer finished its first weekend in India. The business slows down in larger cities on Sunday nights, so there was a modest reduction in Sunday collections, but this is a common pattern for Hollywood films. In smaller centres, the Hindi version’s Sunday sales growth frequently offsets the decline, but in those where Hindi version sales are weak, as is the case with Oppenheimer, Sunday sales can fall.
Oppenheimer now owns the seventh-highest opening weekend, or three days overall, for a Hollywood movie, much like opening day. The weekend record list is a little confusing because some of the films were released throughout the week instead of on Friday; as a result, some of them did better in the first three days of business while others did better from Friday to Sunday. Oppenheimer’s opening ranks as the seventh-largest opening for Hollywood in India on each metric.
Given that most Hollywood blockbusters in India are action-adventure franchise pictures, the idea of a 3-hour talky drama reaching these heights is unfathomable. The filmmaker of the movie, Christopher Nolan, who has a fervent following in India, deserves praise. Even with that following, he never produced this kind of number, particularly when it came to openings.
His most recent regular release, Dunkirk, had first-weekend statistics that were almost four times higher. In fact, Oppenheimer has already surpassed the director’s previous bests of Rs. 55.50 crores by The Dark Knight Rises and Rs. 50 crores by Interstellar in India after only three days of release. With nearly sold-out screenings all the way through August, the movie has outstanding advance sales for the IMAX format. The movie should easily surpass the Rs. 100 crore mark in box office revenue and could compete with Fast X for the title of highest-grossing Hollywood movie in India this year.
