Soorarai Pottru, came as a biopic of Simplifly Deccan founder G. R. Gopinath stood as one of the best films in Suriya’s Career with wonderful dramatisation of the story. It narrates a story of a man who came from a remote village and achieved the impossible in airlines at those times, by creating popular class-free and caste-free airlines.

This film had a direct OTT release during Covid Pandemic and gained huge response from critics and audience.

Interestingly, with its fabulous story line and appealing direction, Soorarai Pottru bagged a total of five awards in 68th National Film Awards.

Marking this, the film’s director Sudha Kongara penned an emotional thank you note. Responding to the significant win, she expressed her gratitude to her late father, mentor Mani Ratnam, Suriya and Captain Gopinath for making her achieve such an honor.

Talking about her father, she wrote, “The journey of this film started with my dad passing away. The last image of my father that I carry is of him gesturing to me from his bed to come to him as I stood in the doorway. I went back and added this as a scene in Soorarai Pottru. As filmmakers I guess most of us are finally just greedy voyeurs looking for those moments in our lives to put into our films (sic).”

Also apart from her father, she thanked her mentor Mani Ratnam, with whom she worked as an assistant director for about seven years. Thanking him, she wrote, “Thank you to my guru. What am I Mani sir without all that you have taught me? A zero (sic).”

Latermost, she conveyed her heartfelt thanks to Soorarai Pottru producer and actor Suriya for living in the Gopinath role on the screen.

Finally she concluded by thanking Captain Gopinath for entrusting her with his life story.
