Twisters Surpasses Godzilla X Kong at Box Office

Glen Powell has once again proven his commercial appeal with the disaster-thriller Twisters, directed by Lee Isaac Chung. The film had a remarkable opening weekend, surpassing the box office performance of Godzilla X Kong. According to Variety, Twisters amassed an impressive $80.5 million from 4,151 North American theaters, edging out Godzilla X Kong, which had garnered $80 million.

Twisters not only exceeded expectations, which were set between $50 million and $55 million, but also secured the third biggest opening weekend of the year. It trailed only behind Inside Out 2 ($154 million) and Dune: Part Two ($82 million). With production costs of $155 million, excluding substantial marketing expenses, the film’s strong opening is a promising start. Universal Pictures handled the domestic release, while Warner Bros. holds the rights for the international market.

Twisters Ends Box Office Deficit

Despite facing stiff competition, Twisters quickly became the top movie in the country. It’s noteworthy that this achievement comes during a period of tough comparisons to the previous year, when Barbenheimer fever was sweeping the nation. However, the box office has gained momentum this summer, thanks to blockbusters like Inside Out 2, Despicable Me 4, and A Quiet Place: Day One.

According to Comscore, the year-to-date deficit at the box office has decreased from 21% to 17% over the past month. Twisters played a significant role in this recovery, demonstrating the audience’s renewed interest in big-screen experiences.

About Twisters

Directed by Lee Isaac Chung, known for his Oscar-nominated drama Minari, Twisters is a standalone sequel to the 1996 disaster epic of the same name. The film stars Glen Powell, Daisy Edgar-Jones, and Anthony Ramos as storm chasers who face the fight of their lives when multiple tornadoes converge over central Oklahoma. The cast also includes Brandon Perea, Maura Tierney, and Sasha Lane in crucial roles.

Twisters has not only captivated audiences with its thrilling storyline and stellar performances but has also proven to be a significant box office success. With its strong opening weekend and positive reception, the film is poised to continue its impressive run in theaters.
