No OTT wants to buy Manjummel Boys despite its roaring success, Here’s why

Manjummel Boys has become the talk of the town. This Malayalam blockbuster has shattered many records and became the first-ever film with the highest grossing in Tamil Nadu compared to Kerala. The Malayalam film Manjummel Boys also faces an OTT dilemma.

Manjummel Boys Box Office

Manjummel Boys grossed Rs. 3.75 crore approx on its third Monday at the Indian box office. With that, the cumulative gross of the film has risen to Rs. 108.50 crores, making it the country’s highest-grossing film from the Malayalam film industry, followed by last year’s release in 2018, which had grossed Rs. 107 crores.

Manummel Boys’ performance in Tamil Nadu has grossed an unbelievable Rs 41 crore to date and is on its way to Rs 50 crore in the following days. While the audiences eagerly await the survival thriller to drop digitally, the makers still need to find a deal for the film. The best price that has been offered is around 10 crore.

Manjummel Boys on OTT

The makers are adamant about quoting Rs 20 crore for digital rights. Earlier, while the films were selling like hotcakes on OTT after their theatrical release, now, the OTT giants believe that buying a film that performed well at the box office might be costly for the OTT.

Amongst the past few releases, only Premalu (all languages except Telugu) and Bramayugam (all languages) managed to crack decent deals. Now that Manjummel Boys is staying on OTT for a while, even Taja Sajja’s HanuMan has been delayed for no reason.

I hope things get sorted amongst the producers and the OTT giants, and we get to enjoy these beautiful films on our screens soon. The trade analysts also discussed how other South Indian flicks, like Aadu Jeevitham – The Goat Life and Varshangalkku Shesham, are still trying to find the correct deal before their theatrical releases.
