Thangalaan Review: One Time Theater Watch

Director Pa Ranjith’s Thangalaan, starring Chiyaan Vikram and Parvathy Thiruvothu, is a fantasy drama that explores themes of oppression and land rights. Set against a historical backdrop, the film immerses viewers in the conflicts between oppression and resistance, as well as greed and survival. Despite its striking visual presentation, the film’s abstract narrative approach may undermine its overall impact.

The Story:

Thangalaan follows the story of Thangalaan (Vikram), a tribal leader who, after a landlord deceitfully seizes his land, joins British explorer Clement (Daniel Caltagirone) on a quest for gold in the Kolar region, believed to be guarded by a spirit warrior. The narrative explores whether Thangalaan’s efforts to change his tribe’s fortunes will succeed.

Thangalaan Review: One Time Theater Experience

The film begins strongly, establishing a compelling tone with engaging characters and action sequences. However, it struggles in the second half, where it becomes repetitive and loses momentum, despite a surprising climax that might resonate with some viewers. Technically, Thangalaan excels with its impressive cinematography by Kishor Kumar, vibrant set designs, and precise editing. The soundtrack by GV Prakash Kumar adds thematic depth and enhances the dramatic moments. Despite some unresolved plot elements and open-ended questions, the film maintains viewer interest through its visual and auditory strengths, though its storytelling falters.

Performances:

Vikram delivers a powerful performance as Thangalaan, capturing the character’s physical and emotional journey with remarkable depth. Parvathy shines as Gangamma, asserting her role within the tribe with quiet strength. Malavika Mohanan brings a mystical quality to her role as Aarathi, a shaman bridging natural and supernatural realms, adding richness to the film. Pasupathy’s performance is notable, reclaiming his place as a skilled actor, while Daniel Caltagirone convincingly portrays the British explorer. G.V. Prakash‘s background score effectively enhances the film’s emotional and dramatic elements.

Plus Points:

  • Striking visual and cerebral storytelling
  • High-quality technical aspects and thematic music

Minus Points:

  • Slow-paced screenplay
  • Confused blending of mythical and political themes

Thangalaan is a visually impressive film dealing with greed, societal oppression, and self-assertion, but it is hindered by convoluted storytelling.

Thangalaan Review Rating: 2.5/5
