Marathi film industry
Anusha Dandekar, an actor and VJ, hasn’t been in a major motion picture in a very long time; her most recent appearance was in the special song Chavanprash from Bhavesh Joshi Superhero. She also decided to make a comeback by returning to Marathi cinema with the recently released Baap Manus.
“I really wanted to get back to acting…. and it has been 10 years since I had done a Marathi film,” She informs us, adding that while Indian cinema is evolving continually, it was past time for regional film industries to undergo a similar change. She further added, “For the longest time, Marathi cinema was looked down upon as a smaller medium,” adding, “Audiences always used to think of regional films as only for a particular region, people, or for those who speak that language.”
The actress added, “Marathi films have really come up now. There are no language barriers anymore. Even globally, streaming platforms have opened up everything for everyone. We watch Spanish films; the other countries watch Hindi and English content… There are subtitles if you don’t know a language, so whatever blocks existed earlier are no longer there.”
With her Marathi film, Dandekar is glad to dispel the myth that regional productions are on a tight budget. “People tend to believe that regional films have relatively fewer budgets, but this is untrue. The actor says we travelled to London for the Baap Manus shoot, noting how fortunate she feels to have had roles in both Marathi and Hindi films.
The actor explains why she was captivated by the project right away by stating that the portrayal of an independent girl spoke to her. But she quickly adds that it doesn’t make the procedure easier while in front of the camera. It is actually very tough to play a character who is identical to you, despite what many performers believe. You are unsure of where to draw the line between acting naturally and performing. Dandekar, who in addition to her acting career has been pursuing her interest of learning ballet professionally, says that when you try to play yourself, you don’t know where the boundaries are; it is incredibly bizarre.
